Map 5: Location of Cow Creek Umpqua Homeland in five Oregon Counties.
With the exception of a small area of about 225 square miles near the Pacific coast around Reedsport and Scottsburg, the Cow Creek homeland occupies almost all of Douglas County.
In fact, since Douglas County has 5,071 square miles, this 225 square mile area represents about 4.5% of the area of Douglas County. The only other parts of Douglas County that do not lie within the Cow Creek homeland are two small areas to the north of the Homeland in the east. Therefore, the Cow Creek homeland covers about 95% of Douglas County, about 4,800 square miles in Douglas County alone.
In addition to Douglas County, the homeland occupies the northern portions of both Jackson and Josephine Counties to the south, as well as the northeastern part of Curry County. To the west, the Cow Creek homeland occupies the entire eastern part of Coos County in which lies the headwaters of both the Coos River and the Coquille River, including its south fork.
