The area ceded by the Cow Creeks in 1853 covers 720 square miles and includes the entire drainage of Cow Creek. It occupies only 15% of the Cow Creek traditional use area lying within Douglas County alone.

Map 7: Cow Creek Umpqua Treaty-Ceded Lands.
The treaty-ceded area excludes the Umpqua, North Umpqua and, besides Cow Creek itself, the South Umpqua River drainages. The Cow Creeks were paid 2.3 cents per ceded acre, and, along with other insignificant monetary benefits, the total compensation for ceded lands was $12,000, or $16.66 per square mile.
Since the treaty-ceded lands include the entire Cow Creek drainage, this means that those lands extend to the ridge line that separate the Rogue River drainage from the Cow Creek drainage. This brings the southwest portion of the treaty lands very close to the Rogue River itself, as shown on the map.
The town of Canyonville is the only significant town within the treaty-ceded area. Notice that Interstate 5, I5, roughly bisects the treaty-ceded lands as it passes through the area.
