The Roseburg News-Review June 28, 2006
Thirty years ago as I came to “God’s country,” I noticed the beauty and the great people, but I noted relatively little pride, low non-timber economy and a lot of out-of-county business loss.I believe in the early 1980s I noticed a small article in The News-Review in which the Cow Creek Indians sought and won recognition. I thought briefly and naively how nice and how just little did I know how important, how good and how much good would come from this.
The Cow Creek Indians have been a model, modem, successful business marvel.
There is a pride, a relatively booming economy, convention center capabilities (and more in the future), fine dining, gaming and big name entertainment. I am proud to have people visit me and see how this community has improved. From my vantage point, everything the Cow Creeks have done has been first rate.
They have reinvested most everything rather than taking money out, and they have given back generously beyond any preset formula. They have been good stewards and business people. I wish many businesses and government entities could be run as well and successfully as they have done.Sue Shaffer in my mind, and I mean no sacrilege, is a economic and moral Mother Teresa for Douglas County.
