Cow Creek Tribe of Umpqua Indians-owned RIO Communications partners with the NBA's Portland Trail Blazer basketball team.
Partnership: The National Basketball Association club is tied to Rio Communications
The Portland Trail Blazers basketball team formally announced its partnership with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians-owned Rio Communications before the season's opening game recently.
The event culminated in the dedication of a cornerstone at the Portland Rose Garden.
Rio Communications was established in Eugene in 1994, but is now headquartered in Bend. The Cow Creeks own majority stock in the company.
Rio Communications provides the Blazers with local and long distance phone services, data service, Internet support and digital subscriber line support.
"We are thrilled with this partnership, Erin Hubert, the Blazers executive vice president said.
There are four cornerstones located on the Rose Garden's main concourse, extending skyward to the upper concourse level. Rio Communications cornerstone provides information about the Trail Blazers organization in the 1990s.
Plasma monitors show video footage of the team--including Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey, Terry Porter and others--during that era. An interactive monitor allows fans to play a basketball game with a five-man team they select from a field of 12. Other interactive elements are featured on the cornerstone.
Sue Shaffer, Cow Creek chairwoman, said "the mission of the Trail Blazers organization is very much in line with the philosophy of the Cow Creek Tribe.
That is, building strong children and families."
Sue Shaffer dedicated the cornerstone during the event. More than 2.5 million people attend events at the Rose Garden annually.
