Wayne Shammel, general counsel of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, spoke to a U.S. Senate subcommittee on finance in Washington, D.C. on May 23.
Shammel addressed the Finance Subcommittee on Long-Term Growth and Debt Reduction at a hearing about “encouraging economic self-determination in Indian country.”
Sen. Gordon Smith is chairman of t
he subcommittee and Sen. John Kerry is its ranking member.
Shammel addressed the tribe’s history and highlighted its current state, including its diversified businesses and contributions to the community.
Shammel also spoke about the tribe’s plans for a water and sewer services project in Canyonville.
In testimony provided to the subcommittee, the tribe asked that as tax policies affecting economic development in Indian country are reviewed, to look at ways tribal governments can access debt capital more cost-effectively.
