Kudos to county businesses that excel in hiring disabled

The Roseburg News-Review - Oct. 17, 1999

Editorial: Cow Creek's Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino Resort receives Kudos for excelling in hiring disabled people in a variety of full-time positions.

Douglas County should be proud of two of its businesses for their standout performance in hiring people with disabilities.

Seven Feathers Hotel and Gaming Resort in Canyonville and Burger King, in Roseburg made the Governor's Honor Roll for Employers of Persons with Disabilities.

Only three other businesses were named to this year's honor roll by the Oregon Disabilities Commission.

This year, Seven Feathers has hired 22 people with disabilities in a variety of full-time positions.

Burger King restaurant has an outstanding record this year for hiring people with disabilities. Disabled employees are fully employed to promote equality with other workers and they receive job coaching from their colleagues. The restaurant also allows flexible schedules to accommodate special transportation needs.

It's refreshing to see companies such as these go way beyond what's normal and average to accommodate people with disabilities in the work force. Too many provide only the concessions required by law.

The positive approach taken by Seven Feathers and Burger King sets a great standard for others to follow. There are undoubtedly a number of other Douglas County employers who also have the same attitude. It's so good to see.
