The Roseburg News Review---Aug.31, 2005
Letter to the Editor---Sara ByersThe Cow Creeks are the fourth largest employer in the Douglas County, and the proposed Convention Center will bring millions of dollars into the county in jobs and tourism.
The two Douglas County Commissioners who are failing to support the Cow Creek convention center plans are being very foolish.
They need to go!This cracks me up. First our county commission wonder-child, Marilyn Kittelman, does the storm trooper number of the Hebe exhibit with a phone call telling McLaughlin to shut it down.
If not for the swift action of concerned county citizens, it would have stayed that way and her censorship would have gone unchallenged.
Then Marilyn Kittelman, not one to be defeated or embarrassed, and with Dan Van Slyke's help, trumped up a laundry list of charges against McLaughlin hoping she'd quit.
When she didn't, but instead sued the county, well the logical thing to do is spend the county's money and hire a lawyer from Portland at $345 an hour to "investigate" McLaughlin
And guess what, a lawyer's fees are going to be more than they expected -- what a surprise. And now the lawyer is asking them embarrassing questions about crosses and Bibles in their offices---what nerve.
Then---and this is what cracks me up the most---we have Van Slyke in the Aug. 19 News-Review article saying (about the investigator), "She never should have had the contract to begin with. We have all the evidence we need. This is nuts."
Well, Dan who hired her?
And at the Aug. 24 commission meeting, the ultimate farce, if only it were funny. Van Slyke first denying that he compared the Cow Creek Tribe to Nazis (what?) then apologizing when told there was a tape recording (oops).

The Cow Creeks are the fourth largest employer in the county, and the convention center/riverfront improvement will bring millions of dollars into the county in jobs and tourism. The phrase "Penny-wise, pound-foolish" comes to mind. Actually, "foolish" about says it.
The Kittelman-Van Slyke duo needs to go.
