Chris Casey - The Roseburg News-Review September 14, 2003
GROWTH STAGE: A live entertainment venue is part of the plan for the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians' development in downtown Roseburg. The Cow Creeks have bought several parcels between Oak and Douglas avenues, including the Douglas County Farmers Co-op, the Holiday Motel and the former Surplus Center Inc.
The tribe plans to build a convention center and dinner house-lounge on the downtown site, but local residents "probably won't see anything beginning on the ground there until next year's construction season, and maybe the year after that,"said Wayne Shammel, attorney for the Cow Creeks.
The co-op is in the process of moving to a new location at 3171 N.E. Stephens St.
Meanwhile, the Cow Creeks are moving ahead with a new development in Canyonville, on the west side of Interstate 5 across from Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort.
Ground is being prepared on the 250-acre tract for a sewer and water treatment plant that will serve a planned 150-to 200-room hotel, RV park and visitors center. The water system sets the stage for the Cow Creeks' added visitor amenities, which may include an aquarium. The aquarium, in the planning phases, would be designed as a regional attraction, Shammel said.
