The Roseburg News-Review September 6, 2005
It gives one pause to witness the cheap sideshow that has apparently replaced solid conservative government in the Douglas County Commission chambers.Tax dollars are being squandered in tawdry, vindictive investigations. Lying is rampant. Blatant grandstanding has taken the place of reasonable debate.
It has been many months since anyone has seriously imagined that our two most strident and outspoken commissioners, Van Slyke and Kittelman, have conscientiously represented anybody in the county.
Now they want to trash the Native American community who has given so much to us and continues to do so. Many of us are appalled and saddened. Van Slyke has even compared them to Nazis.
The Cow Creek Tribe has been planning to build a convention center in downtown Roseburg and we should give them every opportunity, including a property tax break, to encourage the completion of the project.
It is an outrage that Van Slyke and Kittelman will not give them the tax break and thereby promote this project which would be economically advantageous to all of us for years to come.
They should have their heads examined, but I’d settle for a recall.
