The Roseburg News-Review May 25, 2006
I find it very confusing of the stance that Marilyn Kittelman and Dan Van Slyke have taken concerning the purchase of land into Cow Creek Tribal Trust.Traditionally, Republicans have been known to provide wealthy corporations with very generous tax cuts, incentives and governmental fringe benefits (special interests). In return, it is their hope that these corporations will provide more jobs and in part invest in the local economies. Sadly, many of these corporations become invested in themselves and end up outsourcing American jobs to foreign markets.
In contrast, the Cow Creeks have continually provided hundreds of jobs for our community. They have invested themselves and their monies in the communities of Douglas County. This is a noble corporation that is here to actually stay. Frankly, I do not see any selfish advantage the Cow Creeks have here in Douglas County. I certainly do not want to see the Cow Creeks spend their money elsewhere.
I try not to assume the reasons that these commissioners have for opposing the Tribe. What I do know is that it represents very poorly of the state of Oregon. I ask the commissioners to rethink their stance regarding the Cow Creek Indians.
