The Roseburg News-Review June 1, 2006
Now Douglas County has its own flip-flopper in the county commissioners office, and his name is Dan Van Slyke. It is nice to see that his soul searching was such a deep experience, that the very next day (and probably under the pressure with the little sad eyes of fellow commissioner Marilyn Kittelman) he did the flip-flop. Apparently Van Slyke can’t stand on his own two feet with out help.
As been said many times before, the county has no say or jurisdiction over federal tribal law, it’s a federal matter. The Cow Creek Indian Tribe brings much needed jobs to this county, and they donate moneys to many different places. Are these two commissioners afraid that if the Indians build a convention center in downtown Roseburg that it might take away business from the fairgrounds?
And now let’s look at some of the other places not paying taxes, such as churches, school districts, federal lands, hospitals, etc. Don’t you think that these two commissioners would like to take their own property off the tax rolls? Yeah, you bet. All I can say is to please leave the Indians alone.
Now let’s talk about getting a free ride. Why do these two commissioners get to drive county vehicles (car and a four wheel drive pick-up, with the word “commissioner” lettered on the side of the pick-up) home and use county gas? Are they on call 24/7 for that emergency commissioners meeting at 2 a.m. ? Why don’t they drive their own car and truck to work like everyone else and save the county some money? We the people would like an answer from these two commissioners.
