Public Forum – Tribe’s presence helps community

The Roseburg News-Review September 21, 2006
Recently, a gentleman with issues said the Cow Creek Tribe is not his friend and neighbor.
I must disagree. I look forward to improvements in our community. The new convention center in downtown Roseburg, employment and growth opportunities, improved roadways, updated water and sewer systems are just a few of many Cow Creek projects.

He also said that gambling is a debilitating social problem and that few gamblers ever win and many become addicted to gambling. What about drug users and alcoholics? They may become addicts, so may their children. Many forget the rules of the road, drinking, driving and killing our neighbors (your family and mine). To gamble is a personal choice. To drink or do drugs is also a personal choice. Do you put blame on taverns or bar owners or drug dealers?

What contributions do bars and taverns make to our community? What grants and scholarships do they support? What road repair, septic upgrade or waste water treatment have they enhanced in the last 20-30 years? Who benefits from the habits of those addicts? I say if somebody enjoys playing bingo, slot machines or poker, let them. Some days they will win, some days they will lose, but our community benefits from those contributions.

In return for my entertainment at the casino, my neighbors have jobs, their children receive college scholarships, elementary schools receive grants and improvements are made in the community.

Thank you Cow Creek for offering growth opportunities to the people of our county. Thank you for creating job opportunities for the people of our town. Thank you for thinking of the condition of our roadways, waterways and sewers and offering to make improvements to our community.
