Cow Creek Foundation grants help improve quality of life

The Roseburg News-Review - July 20, 2005

Letter to the Editor - Claire D. Crocker

It was inspiring to attend the Cow Creek Foundation awards presentation and to hear how various social service organizations are going to use the monies received.

On July 7, I had the opportunity to be present at an awards presentation where 57 grants were awarded by the Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation to various non-profit organizations. It was inspiring to hear the groups applaud one another in their good fortune to receive these grants.

It was impressive to hear how the various organizations were going to use the monies received. Among the organizations were schools, Safe Place for Kids, summer camps, new books, lockers and even replacing leaky roofs, all for the benefit of others. It made me feel good to hear so many organizations striving to improve the quality of life for the youngest of our citizens.

I know as a volunteer at the St. Francis Xavier Community Kitchen how much the grant means. The gift of such monies last year greatly assisted us in starting our free meal program which has grown from 65 meals a day to 75. Last year we served over 4,000 meals. Without the Foundation's help, we would not have been able to purchase the freezer needed to store our food and obtain other necessary supplies.

The Foundation does make a difference in the community. I am sure that all organizations would agree. Thank you Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation.
