Cow Creeks distribute $253,158 in grants

Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation gives more than $250,000 to 25 charitable and educational organizations in seven S.W. Oregon counties to help provide educational opportunities and to strengthen families.

CANYONVILLE - The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation and the Cow Creek Tribe of the Umpqua Indians distributed $253,158 Monday for their spring cycle of philanthropic giving.

Twenty-five charitable organizations were on hand to meet foundation board members and receive their grants during a ceremony held at the Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort Conference Center.

The event marked the fifth occasion the foundation awarded grants since the group was established in 1997.

The foundation's mission is to offer assistance in youth education, strengthen home and family, contribute to youth programs and improve the quality of life for people living in Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Klamath, Deschutes, Lane and Coos counties.

Groups in Douglas and Coos County that received grants included:

Court Appointed Special Advocate of Douglas County Inc., $20,000 for volunteer recruitment, training and support.

Parent Relief Nursery, $19,330 for outreach staff serving families on its waiting list.

Days Creek High School FFA, $3,500 for the purchase of agricultural equipment.

Oregon Children's Foundation, $14,350 to expand the Start Making A Reader Today program to three south Douglas County schools.

Melrose Elementary School, $10,000 to fund a reading station.
South Umpqua School District, $7,000 for a mentor project.

Lookingglass Elementary School, $6,450 for a land laboratory project.

Glide High School, $3,791 for health vocations program supplies.

Highland Elementary School, $10,109 for the TASK program,

Open Door Clinic, $20,000 for health care services.

Foster Grandparent program, $5,000 for volunteers in schools.

Umpqua Homes for the Handicapped, $11,200 for home repair.

Canyonville Elementary School, $5,900 for shared school/community park equipment.

Umpqua Community Center, $12,500 for repairs.

Special Olympics, $5,000 for equipment and uniforms.

Southwestern Oregon Community College, $3,050 in child care conference scholarships.

In addition, grants totaling $30,000 were given to Lane County programs, while Deschutes and Klamath counties received $22,078 and Jackson and Josephine counties were allotted $38,900.
