Tribe gives scholarship awards

The Roseburg News-Review May 6, 2003
The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians held a scholarship dinner Friday night at the Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort Convention Center in Canyonville.

The tribe, which usually offers scholarships of $1,000 to students from 15 Douglas County high schools, increased the gift to $1,500 this year.

The scholarships are granted to students who will attend Umpqua Community College in Winchester, as part of the tribe’s mission to promote education and child welfare programs throughout southwest Oregon.

Sue Shaffer, the tribe’s chairwoman, said the tribal board recognized that increasing cost of tuition is making it more difficult for students to continue their education after high school.

“We hope this helps,” she said. “This should be a nice surprise.”

Scholarships were awarded to: Josh Mendenhall of Camas Valley High School; Dustin Nixon of Days Creek High School; Alicia Harmon of Douglas High School; Remington Shepherd of Elkton High School; Danny Lovemark of Glendale High School; Lorretta Gow of Glide High School; Jacob Poage of North Douglas High School; Sarah Hjort of Oakland High School; Brandie Weatherford from Phoenix School; Chris Zurbrugg from Riddle High School; Brian Neal of Roseburg Senior High School; Alicia Graham of South Umpqua High School; Evan Rodarte of Sutherlin High School; and Heather Jackson of Yoncalla High School.
