Editorial – Friday Roundup

The Roseburg News-Review September 19, 2003
Pioneer Park transformed with community spirit! To get a feel for the community involvement that went into the remake of Canyonville’s Pioneer Park, consider that every contractor who was asked to pitch in said “yes.”

The resulting transformation is pretty cool.
One ordinarily wouldn’t think of restrooms being attractive, but these set a new standard. With some creative masonry work, the exterior now boasts appealing, artistic pioneer themes, crafted by Victory Builders.
The concession stand and kiosk have received similar treatment.
Operated for years by the volunteer fire department, the concession stand now has a faux log look to the exterior and has nearly doubled in size.
Next up will be a new amphitheater, replacing the small stage and bleachers there now.
The transformation of the park was brought on with volunteer efforts, much of it from area contractors, along with donations.
Canyonville businessman Rick Richardson, who led the effort, said it’s difficult to name all those who helped since so many contractors and builders from Canyonville and as far away as Sutherlin pitched in.
Community groups such as the Lions, chamber of commerce, historical society and the city all were involved and will continue to work on building the amphitheater.
It’s quite a project that both showed off the city’s pioneering community spirit, and should help the city attract more visitors to events.

Cow Creeks pitch in for new water supply
The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians can be a pretty good neighbor to have.
In this case, it was the City of Canyonville that benefited from the success the tribe has enjoyed from its Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort located in that community.
On Monday, tribal chairwoman Sue Shaffer presented the city with an unexpected check for $50,000 to help pay for a backup water supply the city has been pursuing.
The donation will help the city apply for matching grants.
Shaffer called the gift an investment in the city’s future.
That’s the kind of surprise cities always welcome.
