Restore arts in South Umpqua School District

The Roseburg News-Review—April 27, 2006

Letter to the Editor—Ann Shields

Due to the generosity of The Cow Creek Band Of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians, in conjunction with Roseburg Community Concert Association, the student body at South Umpqua High School enjoyed the very talented performance of the men’s a cappella singing group, The Coats.

It occurred on March 15. Students and staff alike were an involved and grateful audience. We thank these two fine groups for bringing this outstanding performance to the youth of our community.

South Umpqua School District has been without a regular vocal music program since 1998. Arnie Erickson has generously volunteered his time this year to re-start such a program at the high school, and we thank him for his kind gesture. However, starting a vocal music program at high school level is similar to starting a band at the high school level. Both programs need “feeder” programs from the junior high and elementary levels in order to be successful.

I dream of a day in which all of the arts are restored in our school district. We have an excellent band program; however, I remember the days when we also had excellent vocal music, drama and art programs. It is my hope that patrons of the district agree with me.
