Grant: The $15,604 given by Cow Creeks will help build a hazardous waste washroom

TILLER - The Tiller Rural Fire Protection District received a check for $15,604 from the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians this week, helping to build a needed hazardous waste wash-up room.

Joanne Miller, fire district treasurer said the washroom is being built to comply with Occupational, Safety and Health Administration guidelines.

“OSHA has been lenient with little rural fire districts like ours," she said.
"But it's something that over time has become mandatory."

The fire district leases property from the U.S Forest Service for its station. The addition will include a washer and dryer, shower and bathroom--things the volunteer firefighters emergency medical technicians never had before.

"In order to build this, it will cost beaucoup dollars," Miller said. "By the time it's through it will be close to $80,000. It seems outrageous, but we need it to protect our EMTs and the community."

Tiller Rural Fire has applied for several grants to offset the cost. The check from the Cow Creeks, which was delivered Tuesday by tribal chairwoman Sue Shaffer, will go a long way toward getting the project started, Miller said.

Shaffer said the tribe often gives money to support programs related to children,
education and public safety. It has helped fund improvements for the Milo Rural Fire Protection District.

In the case of Tiller, Shaffer said the decision to help fund the addition was easy.

That's really the homeland of our people," she said. "And it's a matter of social
consciousness to help."
