Cow Creeks give Canyonville $5,000 to help with memorial

The Roseburg News-Review - Sept. 20, 2002

The Cow Creek Tribe of Umpqua Indians donates $5,000 for a community War Memorial in Canyonville, Oregon to honor Veterans of Foreign Wars.

CANYONVILLE -- Mayor of Canyonville Chuck Spindel got a gift that moved him Wednesday afternoon.

The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians handed Spindel a $5,000 check to be used toward the construction of a Veterans of Foreign Wars memorial that will be placed in front of Canyonville City Hall.

The memorial, which is a work in progress, will be dedicated at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.

"This is very important to us," said Spindel, who is also a member of VFW Post 5714 in Canyonville. "With this check, we've raised over $8,000 so far."

The monument will memorialize all southern Oregon veterans regardless of branch service, or whether they died in combat.

Cow Creek Tribal Chairwoman Sue Shaffer said she is honored to be able to participate in the construction of the memorial by contributing to it. She has several veterans in her own family and will be particularly proud to see the name of her great-grandfather William P. Thomason, a veteran of the Mexican War, on the landmark.

Spindel said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., is tentatively scheduled to speak at the dedication.

The VFW has already collected 400 named veterans who served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and beyond.

Contributions can be sent to VFW Post 5714, P.O. Box 505, Canyonville, OR 97417.
