Three businesses collected top prizes and the Douglas County commissioners received kudos during the second Business Building Community Awards on Monday.
by Chris CaseyThe awards were handed out during the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce noon forum at the Holiday Inn Express in Roseburg.
The honors -- recognizing businesses' charitable donations to community projects and nonprofits as well as volunteer service and paid release time -- were presented by the Douglas County Nonprofit Coalition, the Greater Douglas United Way and the Chamber of Commerce.
A total of 18 businesses were nominated, grouped into three categories -- small, midsize and large.
In the large business category, companies of 100 or more employees, Umpqua Bank won the top prize and The Bon-Macy's received honorable mention.
The six other nominees were Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal Council, FCC Commercial Furniture, Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort, Umpqua Community College, Wal-Mart and Staples.
The News-Review won the midsize category, while R.E. Noah & Co. received honorable mention. McDonald's was also nominated in the category for businesses with between 15 to 99 employees.
Two media-related companies were awarded in the small business category (14 or fewer employees). ImageStream Digital Multimedia won top honors, and Creative Images Printing earned honorable mention. Other nominees were Edge Wireless, Larry Sawyer Painting, McMenamin's Roseburg Station Pub & Brewery, Papa Murphy's and Quality Automotive.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, a special award given for the first time, went to Douglas County Board of Commissioners members Doug Robertson, Joyce Morgan and Dan Van Slyke for their efforts of providing both financial and property assistance to nonprofit organizations in the county.
The inaugural Business Building Community Awards were presented last year.
"Nonprofit organizations rely on the support and assistance of the business community in order to provide services to the people who need them," said Susie Johnston-Forté, executive director of the Greater Douglas United Way, "and it is a great pleasure to thank and recognize those businesses in such a public manner."
The festive awards ceremony, presented by nonprofit agency representatives dressed to the nines in black tail coats and evening gowns, was emceed by Norm Smith, president of The Roseburg-based Ford Family Foundation.
"It is my belief that a healthy community has a strong partnership between local government, the nonprofit sector and businesses," he said.
