Businesses honored for employing disabled

The Roseburg News-Review - Oct. 13, 1999

The Disabilities Commission of Oregon cites Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino Resort for hiring and accommodating Oregonians with disabilities.

Two Douglas County businesses are winning recognition this week for their achievements in employing disabled workers.

Seven Feathers Hotel and Gaming Resort in Canyonville and Burger King in Roseburg both made the Governor's Honor Roll for Employers of Persons with disabilities. Statewide, only three other businesses were named to this year’s honor roll by the Oregon Disabilities Commission.

Several categories of this year's awards will be presented in a ceremony at the state capitol on Thursday.

The disabilities commission cited Seven Feather’s human resources department for accommodating people with disabilities who are recommended for jobs by counselors. This year, Seven Feathers has hired 22 people with disabilities in a variety of full-time positions in Douglas County.

The Burger King in Roseburg has an outstanding record this year for hiring people with disabilities, according to the commission. Disabled employees are fully employed to promote equality with other workers and they receive job coaching from their colleagues.

The restaurant also allows flexible schedules to accommodate special transportation needs.

Among businesses and individuals winning other awards from the Oregon Disabilities Commission are Bay Area Enterprises of Coos Bay which received a Distinguished Service Award. Pacific West Site Service of Eugene also was named to the Governor's Honor Roll.
