Cow Creek Tribe of Umpqua Indians provide buses so Douglas County residents can travel to Salem, Oregon to help raise $1.4 million for the new World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Members of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians traveled to the state capital Thursday to help to raise $1.4 million for the National World War II Memorial.
About 100 people from Douglas County attended the gathering, having taken buses provided by the tribe.
In World War II, we served so heavily in our armed forces, far disproportionate to our numbers in the American population, said Sue Shaffer, chairwoman of the tribe, at the press conference in Salem.
Director of Veterans Affairs for Oregon Jon Mangis, who lost his father in World War II, said Cow Creek members have lead the way and other Oregonians need to meet the challenge.
Ground for the Washington, D.C. memorial is scheduled to be broken later this year if the national goal of $100 million is reached.
