Amassing chunks of federal and state money was pivotal to renovating Roseburg's Grand Hotel into lowincome housing and commercial spaces.
BIG ON LISTS: Douglas County businesses and business leaders received considerable ink in Oregon Business' October issue. Titled "Power Book 2003,"the issue is chock full of lists of the state's biggest companies, biggest deals and most influential leaders.
Sue Shaffer, chairwoman of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, was profiled among the issue's "50 to Follow,"leaders who are "making a difference and keeping people employed.”
The arrival of American Bridge Co. in Reedsport was the lead item in the issue's introduction article.
Umpqua Holdings Corp.'s purchase of Independent Financial Network and Linn-Benton Bank made the publication's list of the top mergers and acquisitions of 2001. Umpqua Holdings is the parent company of Roseburg-based Umpqua Bank.
In the list of the state's top 150 private companies, Roseburg Forest Products ranked No. 7 (sixth in 2001), D.R. Johnson Lumber Co. of Riddle was 48 (51 last year) and Lone Rock Timber Co. of Roseburg ranked 122 (94).
On the list of largest public companies, Umpqua Holdings ranked 35th, from 41st the previous year.
Umpqua Holdings' CEO Ray Davis is a candidate for "Acquirer of the Year,"the magazine said, considering the Portland company's spree of acquisitions, including this year's $215 million purchase of Centennial Bank.
